If you provide assistance to someone who is ill, disabled, or needs help with daily activities, you are a caregiver. Caregiving is often rewarding, but can be very stressful.  Research shows that caregivers are at high risk of depression and stress-related illnesses.  Many family caregivers don't realize the importance of taking care of themselves, because they are overwhelmed by taking care of others.

The Aging & Disability Resource Center of Eau Claire County and Dove Healthcare-South are offering a five-part educational program to give family caregivers skills to take care of themselves and to feel more confident in the care they provide.

"Taking Care of You:  Powerful Tools for Caregivers" is designed to aid those who care for loved ones impacted by Alzheimer's or dementia, Parkinson's, diabetes, stroke, congestive heart failure, or similar long-term conditions.  Participants range in age and include spouses caring for husbands or wives, adult children caring for parents, and friends who help care for neighbors.

The curriculum covers a variety of topics, including tools to help reduce stress; how to communicate effectively with other family members, their doctor, and service providers; the importance of self-care; how to reduce guilt, anger, and depression; relaxation techniques; and how to approach tough caregiving decisions.

Evaluation has demonstrated the program's effectiveness in reducing caregivers' guilt and anger, and in increasing their confidence, as well as their health.  Participants have been very enthusiastic with the results of the class.

The five-part class will be held all Tuesdays in April from 9:30-11:30am at Dove Healthcare-South, 3656 Mall Drive, Eau Claire.  Refreshments are provided and a fee of $20 covers The Caregiver Helpbook and supporting class materials. Seating is limited and registration is required by March 26 by calling the Aging & Disability Resource Center of Eau Claire County at 715-839-4735.
